How Long Does Viagra Last
One of the most common questions men ask about taking Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is “How long does it last after you take it?”.
The answer to this simple question cannot be the same for everybody due to the following reasons. First of all you should remember that how long Viagra lasts (similar to when its action begins) may vary between individuals. The official statement is that in most men Viagra lasts for approximately four hours and gradually loses its effectiveness in a couple of hours. However, there have been reports from men being able still to feel its effects the following morning. The thing is that after four hours some of the preparation may still be in the organism and the pill may continue to work. And it mostly depends on the person's body itself.
But the most important point is that there is a whole number of things that are able to alter how long Viagra lasts.
Some factors may prolong the time Viagra stays in the organism and thus increase the time frame of its effectiveness. Most typical of them include the following ones:
- Age. Being over 65 years old, you simply are not able to process medicines as quickly as younger men, so they remain longer in the bloodstream.
- Having severe renal and/or hepatic disease. If you have kidney or liver problems, that will also slow the breakdown of the medicine and thus prolong its action.
- Taking certain other medicinal preparations (see Viagra Drug Interactions). So, some medicines can keep Viagra in the bloodstream for a significantly longer time.
But there are also factors that on the contrary can decrease how long Viagra lasts. Some of them are as follows:
- Taking Viagra with substantial meal, in particular with high-fat content. It is just harder for the body to digest, and our organism breaks down Viagra before the entire dose of the preparation is able to get where it needs to go.
- Concomitant use of certain other medicinal preparations (see Viagra Drug Interactions). For example, rifampin (an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis) reduces Viagra’s effectiveness significantly due to its effect on the body.
So, talk to your doctor about using Viagra, and always follow his advice.
