
Desyrel belongs to the class of antidepressant. The exact mechanism of its action is unknown as of yet, but it is commonly thought to increase the activity of serotonin, a brain chemical responsible for mood elevation. It is prescribed in cases of various depressive disorder. Desyrel can act as an anxiety disorder symptomatic treatment tool, as well, by helping eleminate sleeplessness, tension and the like. It is also a good chronic pain remedy.
Shortly before taking a dose of Desyrel, it is adviced to have a meal or at least a light snack. The ingestion shedule for Desyrel is usually quite strict; if a dose is missed and several hours have already passed, wait till it is time for the next dose and do not try to catch up by doubling the amount of medication. If you have missed several doses, the medication regimen has to be started anew. Make an appointment with your doctor and discuss the situation.
The common Desyrel side effects are drowsiness and dizziness. You should perform any tasks requiring you to be fully awake and alert if you are having a reaction to Desyrel. Note that these side effects are largely increased by alcohol and certain drugs that cause drowsy states, such as muscle relaxers and sleeping pills. Desyrel also has a rare side effect in men: it causes a prolonged, painful erection, even in situations not associated with sex. If this condition does not receive immediate treatment, it can lead to permanent problems such as erectile disfuntion, which is why it is important to take care of it right away.
