
Decadron is a corticosteroid, ergo a medical preparation that decreases the inflammation or prevents tissues from responding to it. It can also modify the organism's response to certain kinds of immune stimulation. Usually it is prescribed in cases of varioius conditions and states associated with the decrease in adrenal gland function. Apart from this, it is used to treat severe inflammation that has occurred as a result of severe asthma, allergies, various blood disorders, ulcerative colitis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, some of the eye and skin conditions etc.
Decadron has been shown to lower the body's ability to fight off infections, so you need to avoid any exposure contagious diseases. If you notice any symptoms of a common cold or other bacterial/viral infection, inform your healthcare provider. This medication also tends to increase blood pressure and potassium loss through salt and water retention. Your physician may insist on a salt restriction and an introduction of a calcium and vitamin D supplements in your diet to avoid the possible development of osteoporosis. Decadron may also affect the levels of sugar in the blood, which is why they need to be monitored closely throughout the treatment regimen, especially if the patient is diabetic.
Children are often more sensetive to Decadron's side effects. Mind as well that, like all corticosteroids, Decadron can affect children's and teenagers' growth rate. For these reasons the drug must be administered to patients of this age under the close observation of a pediatrician.
